ABOUT THE ARTIST
Aidia Rayne is a trans-nonbinary artist working out of Portland, Maine. They came to Portland by way of attending Maine College of Art and Design in 2018, where they recieved their BFA in Sculpture and writing in 2022. Currently, they are a working artist earning their living as a tattooer and freelance graphic designer for local bands, businesses and performers. Alongside tattooing and graphic design, Aidia has spent years developing practices and bodies of work in Iron casting, blacksmithing, welding, clothes making, wood and stone carving, sculptural installation, experimental music-making, painting, performance art, poetry, playwriting, printing, event planning and curation. If nothing else, they try to stay busy!
According to Rayne’s beliefs, magic can be real if you allow it to be. There is a freeness in unknowing, and a freeness in the simulation of reality. You can run down the street screaming if you so choose, and most of the time, onlookers don’t care to intervene — the moment passes, and the world keeps moving. Including this sentiment, much of Rayne’s studio practice is influenced by western societal history, Situationist International (SI) philosophies, and the atrocities of the human condition.
In their current body of work, these ideas are being filtered into a series of interactive iron objects, and expressive “vaudeville” performances, where the boundary between audience and performer is dissolved using full-room installation, sculptural props, musical collaborations, costumed characters, humor, and the benefit of an unsuspecting audience.
